Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent – Plot Summary

Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent (titled Megane Tokidoki Yankee Kun in Japanese) is a cute and fun manga about a high school freshman named Hiro Momose, who coincidentally meets a rough boy (in other words, a delinquent) after she joins a club in her school.

It starts when Momose’s teacher encourages her to join the “helper’s club” after noticing she wasn’t involved in any clubs. The helper’s club had only one member and was looking for more in order to stay approved by the school.

This club simply helps out around the school by doing any tasks that others need assistance with (volunteer work). The one and only other club member, Dan Ichikura, at first glance seems like a nice and studious student. To Momose’s surprise, he is actually an ex-delinquent!

Unfortunately, Hiro Momose was bullied in middle school by young delinquents and was forcibly made to be their errand girl. After this bad experience, she changed her look when entering high school in order to avoid being taken advantage of again.

Therefore, she isn’t super pleased to get involved with another delinquent… but much to her surprise, Ichikura is a bit different than the others she knew!

Why I Enjoyed Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent

Plot:

Although this manga was originally a one-shot short story, it has been officially serialized due to popularity! After all, the story is very cute and it’s a pretty enjoyable read.

The plot for this series may be rather simple, and definitely a premise that we have seen before (good girl + bad boy pairing) but it is a nice and easy read. It’s a great pick for readers who like a speedy, fluffy romance!

The original story was meant to finish in 8 chapters; therefore, everything in the continuing chapters of Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent follows the development of a fresh romance, along with some high schooler shenanigans. It does get a bit wholesome at times, too!

The opposites-attract theme is very cute and fun. Although it makes the plot fun and humorous, it makes for a unique couple pairing, too. This is because Momose is more of a shy “good girl” who doesn’t like to step outside of her comfort zone too much, whereas Ichikura simply does whatever he wants.

He definitely takes more of a leading role in their romance—and a pretty assertive one, at that! However, Momose and Ichikura may not be as different as they seem at first glance…

Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent is also a fun story outside of the romance, as it seems the plot focuses a lot on delinquents in general, and Ichikura’s efforts to change this image.

Momose knows Ichikura’s true intentions, but she does have to shield him a bit from the rest of the school who doesn’t know much about him—which adds some silliness to this romance.

Although this series does have some common high-school romance shoujo tropes, it doesn’t really have many of the annoying aspects so far. Although misunderstandings happen a bit often, they are always cleared up quickly, so it is pretty well-written in those aspects.

In fact, some of the shoujo tropes are twisted a bit with the addition of delinquents, so it actually adds a new level of humor to the series!

Speaking of humor, this shoujo manga has a good bit of comedy to it—once again, mostly about the delinquents. It often involves them doing whatever they feel like, acting crazy or getting into fights… and poor Momose trying to cover for them, haha. It’s a very light style of humor that complimented the overall story.

Characters:

Ichikura on the other hand seems to have received more attention in the design of his character. He disguises himself as a bookworm honor student, but is actually a rough and eccentric guy that often gets into trouble (in other words, fights). It’s fun to see the gap between these two looks!

Despite me calling this series a bad boy x good girl trope, Ichikura clearly has a good heart and is very easy to pair with Momose. He’s reliable and straightforward, which pairs nicely with Momose’s more nervous and clumsy personality. Although his threatening aura is used as a comedic bit for a while, haha.

In terms of personality, Ichikura is a character who stays true to his word and shows it in even more in his actions. We even get to see a little backstory for Ichikura and some interesting character development.

You’ll like his character a lot even with his delinquent past. Momose takes some time to warm up to him due to her unfortunate trauma, but with the way his character is, it is hard not to like him!

The relationship between these two also progresses in a satisfying way, as they have a nice chemistry and match each other well. I like the contrast in their personalities, and how they still work well together despite their differences. The romance, although quickly made official, still builds at an appropriate pace.

I would love to see their development even past high school and into their adult years, but who knows what the author’s plan is for these two.

Art:

Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent has a very clean art style with a nice character design. The style is pretty consistent with shoujo styles, and doesn’t seem to have many errors, if any. However, as I mentioned earlier, Momose’s design was a bit simple.

We’ve seen plenty of plain, blonde-haired heroines at this point. She is a cute character, with cute reactions—but it’d be nice to see more unique heroines. Especially considering how many other characters in the manga look visually interesting!

On the other hand, I actually really like Ichikura’s character design. He’s got sharp eyes, and rough hair. He looks so cute and goofy in his honor student disguise, but is very cool outside of that. Some supporting characters also have some unique styles that I really enjoyed.

Any Cons?

I’m not sure how much of a con this is, but Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent is a very simple read. If you are looking for a story that is really complex or unique, I wouldn’t really say this is it.

It gives off very familiar shoujo vibes, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It truly depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re a shoujo fan who doesn’t get tired of the usual tropes, definitely give this one a read!

Final Thoughts

I was excited to see more volumes for this fun and wholesome series. I thought that the one-shot had a lot of potential, and am glad to see more! The characters are really cute and the story is fun, so I’d definitely consider this manga worth the read.

It can give you a good laugh and offers a surprisingly wholesome plot. Give it a shot, and share your thoughts below!
