What Is a Romcom Manga?
Simply put, a romcom is a series that incorporates elements of both romance and comedy. However, I’m unsure if there are certain plot-related standards or requirements that make a romcom a romcom.
I’m not even sure if manga publishers “officially” mark series with these sorts of descriptors, to be honest. On top of that, readers often have their own idea of what a romcom should be like—but if this differs from person to person, what is an “actual” romcom?!
I feel like it all depends on what sort of mangas you read. Surely a shoujo romcom and a seinen romcom will have completely different vibes, right? So for this manga list, I’ve included a diverse range of titles that I personally consider romcoms—by my own loose standards: If they mix a fun style of humor and some sort of romance, it counts, haha. These are in no particular order, but I think they are all super fun and enjoyable in their own way. I hope you enjoy!
1. My Love Mix-Up!
Author: Wataru Hinekure
Number of Chapters: 9 volumes, around 35 chapters
Status: Completed
My Love Mix Up! Viz Media page
My Love Mix-Up! is a very cute and goofy BL manga series that follows a male lead named Sota Aoki. Aoki has a crush on his classmate Mio, who lends him an eraser one day. Her eraser says “Ida” on it—which happens to be the name of the classmate who sits in front of Aoki. Poor Aoki is distraught, but decides he will keep her crush a secret.
However, Ida coincidentally sees the eraser in Aoki’s possession, and misunderstands the situation! This romantic mix-up only gets more and more complicated through silly misunderstandings that are just absolutely hilarious.
Additionally, the mangaka draws Aoki with some extremely exaggerated facial expressions, making this entire series even more silly. However, fear not, as this romcom manga has plenty of very wholesome and sweet moments, too!
2. Skip Beat!
Author: Yoshiki Nakamura
Number of Chapters: 51 volumes, 300+ chapters
Status: Ongoing
Skip Beat! is one of my absolute favorite series of all time. There are many reasons for this (which you can read about in the full review) but one of those reasons is how incredibly funny it is. The main character is such an expressive and determined FL—her expressions and actions had me in tears multiple times.
She isn’t the only funny character, either! Her relationship with multiple other characters is so incredibly funny. I really love the humor in this series. It’s such a fun mix of strange character tropes, overexaggerated expressions, idioms being brought to life, and so much more.
As you may have guessed, though, this series has its fair share of romance. Skip Beat! is actually what I like to call the queen of slow burns. It is a 50-volume (and ongoing) series of incredibly exciting romantic build-up. I really love the main romance in this series, as the couple’s dynamic is super fun and a little complicated, but still very exciting throughout the entire plot. I love it so much, so of course I highly recommend this romcom manga series!
3. Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk
Author: Toru
Number of Chapters: 14 volumes, 100+ chapters
Status: Ongoing
Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk Seven Seas Entertainment page
This series is yet another amazing BL romantic comedy. It follows two boys who attend the same school, and are polar opposites (one being a nervous otaku and the other a rough punk). Each of these boys crossdress—the otaku works at a maid café under the guise of a woman (not for anything weird), and the punk likes going to that same café but disguises himself out of embarrassment.
However, these two unknowingly become friends while in their female personas… and actually fall in love with each other! As these two struggle with their crushes and true identities, a whirlwind of hilarious events ensue.
This romcom manga series is so incredibly funny and lots of fun to read. It is a bit of a slow burn, but the excitement of waiting for these two to reveal their true identities makes it all so fun and worth the read. It is ongoing, but there is a good bit to read already, so check it out!
4. Kaiju Girl Caramelise
Author: Spica Aoki
Number of Chapters: 8 volumes, 50+ chapters
Status: Ongoing
Kaiju Girl Caramelise Yen Press page
This romcom manga series is actually a parody series of sorts. It is a seinen manga that mimics shoujo styles and tropes with some hilarious twists. It follows Kuroe Akaishi, a girl who turns partially or fully into a kaiju when her emotions get out of control. She gets romantically involved with the popular boy in her class, which only makes her transformations even more difficult to handle.
While this series features a super adorable art style and rather cute romance, it constantly surprises you with unexpected plot developments and tropes that can only be described as ridiculous. Overall, this manga is tons of fun—who wouldn’t want to read a kaiju-themed romantic comedy? It’s so bizarre and hilarious!
5. Chorokute Kawaii Kimi Ga Suki
Author: Akari Hatta
Number of Chapters: 7 volumes, around 28 chapters
Status: Completed
This super cute romcom manga has a more tame humor with a stronger focus on romance. It follows Nana Oono, a high school girl who describes herself as “easy.” In other words, she is easily wooed by simple flirting and things of that nature. Luckily for her, she meets a guy named Tomoharu Sudaka, who confesses his love for her—and isn’t afraid to flirt!
This begins a very silly and fun blooming romance between the two that is such a joy to read. This shoujo is super cute, incredibly wholesome, and delightfully goofy in all the best ways. If you’d prefer a more traditional-style shoujo romance but with a fun comedic twist, this could be the perfect choice for you!
6. Please Love the Useless Me
Author: Aya Nakahara
Number of Chapters: 10 Volumes, 40 chapters + Sequel story of 6 volumes, 24 chapters
Status: Completed
Please Love the Useless Me is a fun josei series that follows a “girl fail” protagonist. Her name is Shibata Michiko, and not only has she just recently lost her job, but she also has no money—due to her frivolous spending on a handsome younger man.
With no way to support herself, Shibata becomes desperate… luckily, she runs into her ex-boss, Kurosawa Ayumi. Kurosawa offers her a job at his new café, and although he was supposedly a devil in the past, Shibata accepts out of desperation!
These two characters have that bickering-but-not-actually-fighting dynamic, which is the main source of comedy for the series in addition to Shibata’s sort of embarrassing yet relatable personality. Additionally, it features a slow burn romance with a natural progression amongst other adult obstacles that the two main characters face.
While enjoying this slow burn romance and silly humor, readers get to enjoy seeing some solid character development as Shibata works hard to get herself out of the hole she made for herself. It’s a great read for those who want a manga with an adult cast and some great humor!
7. Romantic Killer
Author: Wataru Momose
Number of Chapters: 4 Volumes, 38 chapters
Status: Unfinished with no planned continuation
Romantic Killer Viz Media page or read it digitally on Manga Plus
Romantic Killer is a very fun romcom manga series that is unfortunately unfinished, with no current plans of continuation. However, I still highly recommend this series as it is super fun and goofy. It’s a really fun read, and even without an official ending, I still think it is worth checking out. It isn’t truly a romance because of the ambiguous, unfinished ending—but is still a romance-themed comedy, so I felt it fit in nicely here.
It follows Anzu Hoshino, a girl who isn’t interested in dating. All she wants is to sit at home with her beloved cat, play video games, and eat chocolate to her heart’s content. Unfortunately for her, a magical creature named Riri shows up and turns her world upside-down; confiscating her games, cat, and candy until she falls in love.
Supposedly, this is a magical project designed to help fix Japan’s declining birthrate—but Anzu is uninterested. Regardless of how determined she is to avoid this new task, Riri uses their magic to make all sorts of silly shoujo-esque tropes occur between Anzu and multiple love interests.
This series involves a wide range of hilarious magical events that try to force a romance on Anzu. Anzu, however, fights back against these strange and bizarre events in her own way. This series is honestly so incredibly funny, so if you need a romcom manga that’ll make you laugh nonstop, I definitely recommend this one!
8. Marriagetoxin
Author: Joumyaku and Mizuki Yoda
Number of Chapters: 170 digital chapters + lots of bonus chapters (13 physical volumes in English)
Status: Ongoing
Marriagetoxin on Manga Plus (digital)
Marriagetoxin is yet another bizarre comedy with a hint of romance. It follows Hikaru Gero, an expert assassin who is the descendant of a family of poison users. The series begins with his grandmother demanding that either he or his sister produce an heir to continue their special lineage.
Gero is single and hopeless with women, so his sister decides she must break up with her girlfriend in order to continue the posion clan family lineage. However, Gero is determined to protect his sister’s relationship, and vows to get married instead. The only issue is, again, Gero can barely speak with women…
Luckily for him, he meets Kinosaki—an experienced marriage swindler who crossdresses as a beautiful woman. Kinosaki becomes the best wingman and comes up with a way to meet women in a way that is doable for Gero—through bodyguard jobs! This unique method leads Gero to all sorts of potential marriage candidates.
This romcom manga series is full of action, as well as strange otherworldly people, powers, and creatures. It’s a really fun series for those who want something more involved and adventurous, but in the weirdest ways possible. The story is just so hilariously bizarre and weird, yet somehow still creates a likable male lead with lots of unique romantic interests. It’s honestly a great blend of romance, comedy, and action!
9. Kuzumi-Kun, Can’t You Read the Room?
Author: Mosco
Number of Chapters: 8 Volumes, around 51 chapters + extras
Status: Completed
Kuzumi-kun, Can’t You Read the Room? Yen Press page
Last but not least, we have Kuzumi-kun, Can’t You Read the Room? This fun romcom manga follows a simple slice-of-life and school-life style story. The protagonist is a girl named Erika Sakura, a very popular girl who can’t seem to get this one guy out of her head.
The guy in question is her classmate Kuzumi: A short, quiet, and rather uninterested classmate who always has his head in the clouds. Erika’s advances and efforts to get Kuzumi to notice her always seem to fall flat, and so this romance mostly follows the hilarious efforts of Erika to grab Kuzumi’s attention—while she also battles with herself over the fact that she fell for someone like him.
This series is honestly so cute, featuring a very slow burn romance and a calm slice-of-life style of humor. The comedy isn’t crazy or in your face, but rather situational and silly due to the extreme personality differences between Kuzumi and Erika. It’s a nice and easy romcom manga to enjoy, so if you’d like something a bit more tame, this could be a great pick!
10. Mechanical Marie
Author: Aki Akimoto
Number of Chapters: 2 volumes so far in English, 6 in Japanese (completed)
Status: English publication ongoing
Mechanical Marie Yen Press Page
This cute series more accurately depicts what I imagine when I think of a “romcom manga.” It has the perfect blend of cute, fluffy romance and nonsensical comedic elements throughout. Mechanical Marie is a series recently picked up by Yen Press that follows a girl named Marie who must become the maid and bodyguard of Arthur Louis Zetes—a rich heir who is constantly targeted by his family.
The only problem is that he absolutely hates people, and has a major distrust of humans. Therefore, Marie must pretend as though she is a high-tech robot that was expertly crafted to appear human! Luckily, Arthur isn’t that hard to fool, but Marie’s true obstacle is that he isn’t afraid of freely showing his affection for his new “robot” companion.
This series is a really fun and lighthearted read. The premise is really goofy, and the humor mostly centers around these silly characters and the ridiculous situations they get into. If you want to have a good laugh while still enjoying a fluffy romance, this series is one to look forward to!
Final Thoughts
These are just some fun examples of romcoms that I have really enjoyed!
